Founded in 1982 by a coalition of local churches, United Ministries of Savannah was created to address the growing need for services supporting individuals experiencing homelessness in the area. The founding churches—Christ Church Episcopal, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, First Baptist Church of Savannah, First Presbyterian Church, and the Lutheran Church of the Ascension—came together with a shared vision of providing compassionate care and support.
Under the umbrella of United Ministries, Emmaus House is the sole program dedicated to serving this mission. Originally established at First Baptist Church in the 1980s, Emmaus House expanded its operations and relocated to the dining hall of Christ Church Episcopal as the demand for its services outgrew its original space. Today, Emmaus House continues to provide essential services, including meals and support, for those in need within the Savannah community.
Today, United Ministries of Savannah is represented by various houses of worship throughout Savannah and surrounding areas. These congregations support Emmaus House and its mission through annual giving, volunteering, and sponsorship of events like the Empty Bowl Fundraiser, helping to sustain the vital work being done to serve the homeless and those in need.
